2024 Bentley Bentayga SUV axes iconic W12 engine

Bentley has quietly removed its iconic twin-turbo W12 engine from the Bentayga, as the luxury SUV gains a number of equipment upgrades for 2024.

The Bentley Bentayga will no longer be offered with twin-turbo 12-cylinder power, following an update to the luxury SUV overseas which removed the option of its fastest variant.

Bentley has announced the Bentayga would gain a number of safety and equipment upgrades for 2024 – though not for the W12-powered versions, which are no longer available after being farewelled by a last-of-the-line ‘Speed Edition 12’ special edition earlier this year.

In February, Bentley pulled forward the end-of-production date for its iconic W12 engine – of which more than 1000,000 examples have been built since 2001 – to 2024, two years ahead of schedule due to the marque’s impending switch to lower-emissions plug-in hybrid and electric cars.

The current Bentley Bentayga’s twin-turbo W12 produces 467kW and 900Nm – considerably more than the SUV’s twin-turbo 3.0-litre petrol V6 plug-in hybrid system (340kW/700Nm), as well as its 404kW/770Nm twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 offering.

For 2024, the standard-wheelbase Bentayga has been equipped with features from the SUV’s ‘extended’ wheelbase (EWB) versions, including rear-axle steering (standard on Bentayga S and Azure) and optional ‘airline seats’.

Bentley’s flagship SUV is also now fitted with remote parking (operated via a smartphone app), a 360-degree camera and an emergency assist system.

According to the British car maker, the Bentayga’s adaptive cruise control, lane departure and security systems have been improved.

Also new in certain markets is a new Bentayga A model grade.

It is not yet known when the updated Bentley Bentayga will arrive in Australian showrooms.
