Kia EV2 small electric car confirmed for 2025
Kia has announced plans to introduce a new, more affordable electric vehicle badged EV2 from 2025, expected to take the form of a hatchback.
South Korean car-maker Kia has used an electric-vehicle media showcase event to confirm plans for an upcoming, entry-level small electric car named EV2, due in 2025.
Focused on the European market, it will sit beside a further 14 electric vehicles Kia plans to sell by 2027. Australian arrival plans are yet to be outlined.
“The Kia EV2 will be produced in 2025 at the Slovakia plant along with other electric models,” Kia said in a statement to media.
The Slovakian plant currently produces the Kia Ceed – the European counterpart to Australia's Kia Cerato small car – in petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid formats.
However the facility will shift to only producing electric vehicles from 2025 – such as the Kia EV2, Kia EV3 small SUV, and Kia EV4 sedan.
Few details about the EV2’s shape have been shared, though it will be smaller than the Kia EV3 SUV and feature "European" styling.
"[The Kia] EV2 is very unique and very important model for the European market and this is a smaller size than EV3," Kia global president and CEO Ho-Sung Song told a media briefing.
Plans for the EV2 were unveiled alongside three other electric vehicles: the EV3 small SUV concept, EV4 sedan concept, and production-ready EV5 SUV.
Kia says these three models will span the $US35,000-$50,000 ($AU54,500 to $AU78,000) price range.
The car maker says its electric-car range will eventually span vehicles priced up to $80,000 ($AU125,000), for the current EV6 and EV9 – and with an entry point of $US30,000 ($AU47,000).
It leaves room for Kia EV2 prices to start from $US30,000 to $US35,000 ($AU47,000 to $AU54,500).
How much it would cost in Australia is unclear, however if it is built exclusively in Slovakia the EV2 would face a 5 per cent import tariff compared to Kia cars from South Korea, with which nation Australia has a Free Trade Agreement.
It is expected the EV2's body style will be hatchback-like, however it may adopt SUV-inspired styling cues similar to the EV4 sedan concept.
Given the EV3 will be close to a Kia Seltos in size, there is room beneath it for an even smaller, city electric SUV for buyers chasing a high-riding, utilitarian look.
